Investigating the latest issues generated by digitalization

Jonas Lund is a Swedish conceptual multimedia artist whose art focuses on network-based culture. Interested in the effects and consequences of the increasing digitalization in today’s world, Lund uses technology to critically reflect on current networked systems and power structures and reveal the unseen processes at play in contemporary society. His artistic practice involves creating elaborate analytical software systems and exploiting accumulated data. Lund’s notable net artworks include Fear of Missing Out, Operation Earnest Voice: Brexit Division, Studio Practice, Flip City, Projected Outcomes.

Through his art projects, Lund investigates the latest issues generated by digitalization, such as authorship, participation, and distribution, highlighting the interconnections between information, technology, and society. In particular, the artist enjoys exploring and questioning often absurd mechanisms of the art world and art market practices. He uses participatory and performance-based practices in many of his projects. In 2018, Lund created his own cryptocurrency called Jonas Lund Token that functions as voting shares in his artistic practice, thus giving birth to a new art form called “performance-art capitalism.”

Jonas Lund earned an MA at Piet Zwart Institute, Rotterdam (2013) and a BFA at Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam (2009). He has had solo exhibitions at The Photographers’ Gallery (2019), Whitechapel Art Gallery, London (2016), Steve Turner, Los Angeles (2016, 2015, 2014), Växjö Konsthall Sweden (2016), Showroom MAMA, Rotterdam (2013), New Museum, New York (2012). His work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including Centre Pompidou, Paris, Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin, ZKM, Karlsruhe, Vienna Biennale 2019, Witte de With, Rotterdam, Kindl – Centre for Contemporary Art, Berlin, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and covered by publications such as Artforum, Frieze, Kunstforum, The New Yorker, The Guardian, Metropolis M, Artslant, Rhizome, Huffington Post, Furtherfield, Wired and more.
